The No Kid Hungry Kentucky campaign is a collaborative effort to address the complex issue of childhood hunger by increasing access to federal nutrition programs among Kentucky’s children.
Our focus for 2016 was the Summer Food Service Program, administered by the Kentucky Department of Education. Our goal was a 10% increase in sponsors, sites and meals. To achieve this goal, we worked to increase awareness of the program, engage community organizations to serve as sponsors and sites, and encourage schools to serve as sponsors or vendors. Our target counties for 2016 were Bell, Clay, Gallatin, Jefferson, Lawrence and Rockcastle.
We are thrilled to report that the goal for increase in sites and meals were exceeded! The number of sites increased by 30% and the number of meals increased by 15%. The number of sponsors increased by 8%. That means more children had access to food during the summer months in Kentucky.
We have continued our focus on the Summer Food Service Program for 2017. Our goal this year is to have a 10% increase in both sites and meals. To achieve this goal, we are working to increase awareness of the program, engaging statewide stakeholders, and encouraging sponsors to participate in our new sponsor-to-sponsor communication forum. Our target counties for 2017 are Boyd, Estill, Gallatin, Henry, Jefferson, and Rockcastle.
